Alan Drayton Builders Ltd is a West Auckland based Bio Building team located
in the Waitakere hills.
Who We Are
 Alan
Drayton Builders was established as a family business in 1986 and worked initially
in the field of difficult site specialists, however we soon sought something
more from the construction industry. With a desire to create homes that were
healthy for both people and the environment the knowledge of bio-harmonic building
was gained from the Institute of Building Biology and Ecology and Bio Building
began to be incorporated into our projects.
What is Bio-Building?
Bio Building incorporates harmonious principles and practices of construction
in relation to the human being and the environment. Considerations are made
to the health of the people living in the buildings and those constructing them
as well as the impact of construction on the local and global environment.
What We Have Done
Over the past 14 years our focus on ecologically and biologically sustainable
building has brought us many unique buildings designed specifically for their
site and owners. Our projects have ranged from landscape installation to family
homes to eco retreats, using a variety of materials from rammed earth to timber
to stone.
Recent Projects

The Tara Sanctuary - part of the
Mana retreat centre on the Coromandel. This stone clad building and bell tower
was created with natural design and building principles.

- The Ohui Lodge, a house and
music studio on the Coromandel. These buildings are circular, built with recycled
and sustainably grown timbers, concrete and glass and the roof is completely
clad with succulent plants. The water heating comes from solar and wetback,
in-slab water heating provides warmth for the house, and the pools are heated
by solar and heat pump.

- Our most recently completed project was for Co-housing NZ Ltd, the construction
of the Common House at Earthsong, a Co- housing community in West Auckland.
We previously constructed Stage 2a in 2004; two rammed earth and timber buildings
containing 7 apartments and completed the site works for Stage 1 at Earthsong
in 2001.

Currently we are constructing the last block of 8 apartments in an earth building
at Earthsong.
Future Plans
Our future developments include continuing our work with clients and architects
in the Bio Building field as well as creating our own designs.
